When one looks at branding or a trademark, it is an appellation or an identifier. It indicates something, It communicates. Art is about the subject object relationship. It is about us, the subject, experiencing the object. So one image, or object can be ‘loaded’ with inferences for one individual or ‘subject’ more than another, due to what that individual brings to the table. Branding is about inference, it is about information conveyed and received and even ‘felt’ that brings people to certain conclusions. Branding is imagery, a wordmark or iconography that causes people to think, feel and conclude differently. Branding is about a distinct body of information (sometimes communicated in the brand mark itself) both presented and received that is distinguished as not the same. It is otherness. The relationship with an image or a mark is identification with otherness and signifies a connection to identity, a link is formed, an engagement has begun. The brand has become imbibed into a collected identity of chronicled imagery, a catalogue or bricolage of imagery that makes up what we call life, at least a life when viewed from an imagery standpoint. We are, among many things, collectors of marks, of images, of things that make us feel a certain way. Things that may even give voice to latent uges or desires we might not be able to articulate. A large part of what branding does and can do, is give us a vehicle to express ourselves a little more and say this is what and whom I identify with.
